We invite you to a tour of Peterhof, the capital of fountains! This is a magnificent country residence of Russian tsars, founded by Peter I in 1705 on the shore of the Gulf of Finland.
The ensemble of palaces and parks of Peterhof is a triumphal monument in honor of Russia’s struggle for access to the Baltic sea.
The ensemble includes the Grand Palace, the Cottage Palace, the palaces of Marley and Monplaisir, the Catherine building, and the Hermitage pavilion. Peterhof’s parks, the Upper garden and the Lower park, are of no less interest. The Peterhof compounds include the English landscape park, the Village and Meadow parks, and the Alexandria park.
Peterhof’s chief decoration is hundreds of various fountains that form a picture a unrivaled beauty. Notable among them is the famous Great cascade designed by Peter the Great. This is one of the most grandiose fountain structures in the world: a huge grotto with richly decorated waterfall stairs on the sides. The most colorful symbol of the Russian victory over the Swedes is the «Samson» fountain with a statue of the biblical hero tearing the lion’s jaws apart.
