Elena (guide and owner) worked with us via email, prior to our trip, to design the private tour we wanted. Elena and Anastasia (driver) make a great team, they were friendly and spoke excellent English. The van waslarge, comfortable and clean and we were given bottled water.Elena arranged for the tour tickets and Russia visa (if you book a tour with a Russian Tour Operator, they getthe temporary visa for you) in advance and gave us clear instructions where to meet her on arrival. We didn'thave to pay anything until the day of the tour. She was on time, waiting for us (holding a sign with our nameon it).
We chose shopping in the morning for traditional Russian souvenirs (Nevsky Prospekt is where all the reallyexpensive shops are); Elena took us to some very nice local shops that had a wide range of prices forsouvenirs. Then we went to the Church on Spilled Blood, where we had lots of time to go inside for viewingand outside for photos. She also made stops by the Neva river, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and a few other places so we could takepictures. We wanted to go for a Traditional Russian lunch (our cost); Elena took us to the Terrassa restaurant (it alsoserves European food).
Elena helped us choose some local dishes (mushroom soup served with a side ofsour cream, assorted meats & pickles, dumplings) which we enjoyed. We sat outside on a 2nd level patio;they had heat lamps and blankets on the chairs, with beautiful views of the city.In the afternoon, we visited Catherine's Palace; Elena did a good job of getting us into the sites before largetour groups arrived (small group tours can bypass the large ones).
Private tours are worth the money. We talked to some people who took the cruise tours; some paid more forlarge group bus tours and were not as happy with their experience. We got everywhere quickly, had plenty oftime to see and do exactly what we wanted to and avoided long waits. We would highly recommend RedSun Tours for the personal/professional service Elena provides.
Our onlyregret was that we did not (also) book her for our second day in St Petersburg!
Our guide, Elena, made this an unforgettable experience. After she showed us St Petersburg and gave us alot of insight into the history, we are in love with St Petersburg! Her knowledge and way of sharing it with us isamazing! Another highlight was the dinner with her family.
