The State Russian Museum is the first Russian museum of genuinely Russian art; today it is the largest in the world. It was opened in 1898 by Emperor Nicholas II in memory of his father Alexander III.
Today, the exhibition comprises five independent buildings: the Mikhailovsky castle, the Benois wing, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great, the Stroganov palace, and the Marble palace. Each of these buildings is unique in itself.
In the main building of the museum, you can see the works by Andrei Rublev, Ilya Repin (including the famous «Barge Haulers» and «Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks»), Karl Bryullov (including «The Last Day of Pompeii» and «Italian Noon»), as well as the Aivazovsky hall («The Ninth Wave») and much more.
During the tour, you will get to know the history of the building and the life stories of its first owners. You can explore its collection of icons (the oldest of which dates back to the 12th century) or make yourself familiar with the art of the 18th century (from icon-styled parsunas to realistic portraits). The guide will tell you about the works of academician artists.
This tour will give you an opportunity to transgress the veil of time, travelling to the past of Russia and experiencing its history first-hand.
