Pavlovsk is a former summer residence of the Romanovs. A good half of the city is occupied by an open-air museum — the famous palace ensemble with a landscape park, one of the most beautiful in the world. You can pace it slowly, taking your time to enjoy nature and admire the architecture. The Pavlovsk Palace, a royal residence of the late 18th century and a fine example of Russian classical architecture, is located in the depths of a vast park compound. Its strict facade in yellow and gold with white columns can be seen from almost anywhere in the park.
The main building is crowned by a flat dome with a colonnade, whereas the wings and the galleries are richly decorated with stucco emblazoned with Romanovs’ monograms and martial symbolism. Two centuries ago, these rooms and halls welcomed the crème de la crème of St. Petersburg.
What to see:
Today, they have been transformed into a historical exhibit: genuine interiors of the Imperial times are preserved here, up to the curtains and furniture upholstery. In some rooms, exhibits brought by Romanovs from all over the world are on display. Other displays present a chance to glimpse into the life and pastime of the Royal family. The Pavlovsky reserve, occupying 540 hectares of land, is known as one of the largest landscape parks in Europe. This is the only country park which has been open to the public for two centuries. The park annually hosts music festivals, mass celebrations, and folk fairs.
Your private guide and chauffeur will meet you at your hotel with the Red Sun sign. The drive in a comfortable vehicle to Pavlovsk will take you about 1 hour. Pavlovsk town is located about 30 km from St. Petersburg. The summer residence of Emperor Paul I and his wife Maria was founded at the end of the 18th century. The elegant classical style interiors will strike you with its own special charm, perfect proportions, and impeccable taste.
