Tour of Yusupov Palace
Yusupov Palace is a unique 18th-20th-century architectural ensemble. It was owned by five succeeding generations of the Yusupov noble dynasty.
The history of the Yusupov palace began with a hunting lodge, built by an order of Ivan the Terrible on the spot where he lost his hat during a hunt. After some time, the cabin turned into a palace, which has changed many owners since. Its noble owners fell out of favor, sold their buildings and lands until the young emperor Peter II presented them to Prince Yusupov, whose family owned the palace until the 1917 revolution. The edifice is open to the public with its staterooms, theater, living rooms, and historical areas. Concerts of classical music, theater performances, and singing evenings are held here regularly. It also hosts various cultural events and receptions. In the basement, where Rasputin was murdered, there’s an exhibition called “Grigory Rasputin: pages of life and death”, including wax figures.
The Palace went down in Russian history as the place where Grigory Rasputin, a Siberian peasant, mystical spiritual mentor, and friend of the family of Emperor Nicholas II was assassinated. The tragedy unfolded on the night of December 17, 1916, in the Living quarters of the young Prince Felix Yusupov. Today these rooms house a display of historic pictures, documents and wax figures of the participant of the crime.
