Tour of Catherine Palace and Park in St Petersburg
The majestic Catherine Palace and Park was one of the most beautiful summer residences of the Russian Tzar’s family. It was originally built for Catherine I as her “palace of 16 chambers”. The grounds were presented to her as a wedding gift by her dear husband Peter. Later the palace was redesigned for her daughter Elisabeth in luxurious baroque. The Tour of Catherine Palace and Park is a fantastic opportunity to see it live.
Catherine Palace is very popular among tourists and thousands of people queue 6 hours in advance to get in. Red Sun Tours have an exclusive contract with the Catherine Palace which lets us visit the museum from different gates and not wait for admission. Skip-the-line system is very valuable for the Catherine Palace and if you book the tour with us, you don’t have to wait to see the palace interiors.
During the tour of the Palace, you will walk through the majestic gallery of the state halls where balls, receptions and gala dinners took place. The Golden suite of rooms is made with gold leaf. It is luxurious and opulent.
With our guide, the Palace will get alive with its mysterious stories, intrigues, and plots. In the Palace, you will visit the famous Amber Room or “the Eighth Wonder of the World”.
What’s in the Catherine Palace
The main hall of the palace, largest among all palaces in St Petersburg, is the Throne room; its ceilings reach about 47 m in height. Attention is immediately attracted to the magnificent parquet and majestic plafond covering the entire ceiling. Strolling through the rooms of the Palace along with its huge ceiling-high windows, you can see the Silver and Blue cabinets, the Lyon and Arabesque living rooms, the domed dining room and the Chinese hall, the waiters’ room, the bedchambers, and the front office. Among tourists, the Amber room (Amber study) of the Catherine Palace is one of the most popular. This famous masterpiece of jewelry was enveloped in legends and myths from the very moment of its creation.
Initially, the decorations of the Amber room were created by the order of Prussian kings. In 1716, Friedrich Wilhelm I presented the room to Peter the Great. Later, it was extended and mounted in the Winter Palace, but then moved to Tsarskoye Selo. During the Second World War, the Nazis displayed elements of the Amber room in the Amber Museum in Koenigsberg. Since 1979, works were carried out to recreate the lost Amber room; in 2003, on the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, it was restored in the entirety of its grandeur. The restoration was partially funded by German enterprises.
Catherine Palace could be a fantastic addon to the Hermitage Museum, called the Winter Palace. You can learn more about it in our Hermitage Museum tour.
