Tour of the Hermitage Museum
Hermitage is one of the most visited museums in Europe. Its significance and cultural heritage are on a par with the Louvre in Paris. It is one of the twenty largest art museums in the world. The Hermitage was built in 1764 as a private collection for Catherine II after she received a gift of 317 valuable paintings from Berlin. Now it is one of the largest art and history museums in Russia and the world.
Today it stores more than 2.7 million exhibits from around the globe, spanning its entire history (from Ancient Egypt to the early 20th century in Europe). The Hermitage collections include works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, unique collections of Rembrandt and Rubens, many works by French impressionists Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, numerous paintings by van Gogh, Matisse, Gauguin, and several sculptures by Rodin. The museum occupies seven buildings: Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Large (Old) Hermitage, New Hermitage, Hermitage theatre, Menshikov Palace, and the former General Staff Building.
